Onshore wind and solar PPAs signed with WSW – supplying businesses including Bayer AG with renewable energy sources
Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) and Centrica Energy have agreed on two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for electricity from renewable energy sources each spanning 10 years. Under these agreements, Centrica Energy will supply electricity to WSW from a German onshore wind farm developed by PNE AG and two solar parks developed by ENERPARC AG. The power supplied enables WSW to supply customers such as Bayer AG with electricity from renewable energy sources of the highest quality across some of its German sites.
The onshore wind farm has a total installed capacity of 32 megawatts (MW) and generates approximately 58GWh annually, whilst the two solar parks have a combined capacity of over 19MW and produce around 19 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually. Collectively, the sites will supply more than 77GWh of renewable electricity annually, corresponding to the annual consumption of 19,250 households.
Long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are a market-based instrument that ensure continuous access to electricity from renewable energy sources while managing price risk. “Agreements like these allow us to actively shape the energy transition. This enables us to develop sustainable and innovative products for the future and to assume our responsibility for environmental and climate protection,” says Tobias Wendisch, Head of Energy Trading and Controlling at WSW, underlining the strong trust and partnership built with Centrica Energy.
Jan Gibbert, Head of Central European and Biomethane Origination at Centrica Energy, said: “Working with WSW has been a pleasure. With this project, we have further expanded our presence and competencies in Germany, especially in the PPA market. These types of agreements clearly demonstrate that existing solar and wind sites can be successfully integrated into PPA structures and used to supply corporate end-users.”
