Centrica Energy and Nyrup BP sign optimisation agreement for 10 MW / 20 MWh grid-scale battery in Denmark

Centrica Energy and Nyrup BP have today announced signing of an optimisation agreement for the 10 MW / 20 MWh battery energy storage facility (BESS) Nyrup. The energy storage facility Nyrup is owned and developed by a group of Danish wind developers and BattMan Energy. The facility is located in the DK2 balancing group in Nyrup, Zealand.

Under the agreement, Centrica Energy will provide route-to-market and optimisation services for the Nyrup BESS, enabling participation in short-term power trading and ancillary service markets. Drawing on extensive experience in Danish ancillary service markets and grid scale BESS optimisation in European markets, Centrica Energy will leverage it’s advanced platform that enables cross-market optimisation, delivering the strongest return-on-investment for the asset, including through participation in aFRR markets.

Kristian Gjerløv-Juel, VP of Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation at Centrica Energy said: “We’re excited to have signed this agreement with Nyrup BP. Whilst we have 500 MW of grid-scale batteries under contract in the UK, continental Europe and the Nordics, the agreement is a first for Centrica in Denmark. Batteries are essential to decarbonising energy systems, and helping to manage the intermittency in renewable generation. We will keep evolving our platforms and solutions to drive investment and deployment of grid-scale batteries.”

With a significant surge in installed solar capacity and growing volumes of renewable generation concentrated within peak hours, batteries are providing a critical contribution to grid flexibility by supporting intertia, balancing, and lowering overall system costs. Batteries make it possible to deliver clean and green when renewable generation is scarce, whilst minimising stress on the power grid and enabling new revenue streams for surplus solar power.

Jakob Ferløv Greth, Chairman of Nyrup BP said: “At Nyrup BP we are an experienced group of Danish wind developers and investors, owning wind assets across Denmark, alongside the BESS development company, BattMan Energy. Nyrup BESS takes an important step in supporting Denmark’s evolving energy landscape, providing critical flexibility to balance increasing renewable generation. We are pleased to collaborate with BattMan Energy and Centrica Energy, bringing together expertise in development, optimisation, and trading to maximise the value of the asset.”

Daniel Kappelgaard, CEO at BattMan Energy said: “Nyrup BESS will be one of the largest grid-scale batteries connected to the Danish power grid, and we’re thankful Nyrup BP’s trust in us to deliver this project from development to commercial operation – demonstrating the strength of an end-to-end approach when bringing infrastructure projects to life. We are also very proud to partner with Centrica, leveraging their vast experience in energy balancing and power trading. At BattMan, we believe that BESS will form the backbone of tomorrows energy system”.

Nyrup is BattMan’s third BESS in operation in Denmark, with a project development pipeline exceeding 3 GW of which +190 MW is ready to be built. With opening of the Nyrup BESS, BattMan now has 20 MW / 40 MWh in operational projects across Denmark.

The facility will utilise the BattCon power plant controller developed by BattMan Energy, interacting with Centrica’s optimisation and trading platform.
