What made you make the move to Centrica Energy?

I wanted to work in markets and use the skills I learned from my degree in the place I worked. Even going through the interview process, it felt like I was learning a lot. There are so many shades to commodity trading, and Centrica Energy is broad in what it covers and the method it uses.

What do you do in your current rotation?

I work on the short-term power analytics team, and my tasks greatly vary. Often, it is data analysis to assess what strategies work and ways we can improve our models, and these can be very different in terms of complexity and methods used. We really need to think about the fact that we are not just trading paper but rather a physical output of power, which adds a new dimension.

What is the best part of being a graduate at Centrica Energy?

The best part of being a graduate here is that you are thrown into the deep end. You are guided nicely on development, and what you do can really contribute to how the team performs. When the responsibility of key tasks that impact PnL falls on you, it brings out the way of thinking where you think about results, making you more focused.

Can you tell us about an achievement you’re proud of?

I am quite proud of a model I built during my first rotation, that can analyse the impact calibrations from quantitative analytics can have on the PnL. It offered a lot more visibility to everyone and I was very happy to learn about it. Now I hope to achieve new learnings in my second rotation.

What’s your best advice for someone wanting to make the move and join the graduate programme?

Don’t be afraid that you won’t be able to do it, the worst that happens is you may not get through, and that’s fine. But if you don’t apply, then you might have missed out on something that would have been a great fit for your skills. Even if you don’t succeed, the interviews are done in a way that is really helpful for future interviews too.

What should someone dreaming of becoming an Energy Mover know about Centrica Energy?

Centrica Energy is incredibly diverse. You can move energy any way you like, through so many different energy sources, from wind parks to LNG. Everyone’s skills can be used, so you are sure to find your fit here.
