To accelerate the delivery of clean energy and promote sustainable land use, Cero Generation partnered with Centrica Energy on its 48MWp Castrum solar PV project in Montalto di Castro, Italy.

Cero Generation, which is quickly becoming one of Europe’s leading renewable energy producers, was looking for a partner to support the commercialisation of solar energy from its subsidy-free project. Centrica Energy was selected for its strong track record in power purchase agreements (PPAs) and its commitment to net-zero goals.

The Castrum project spans 86 hectares and features over 88,000 bifacial solar modules mounted on single-axis trackers, optimising energy production. It is designed to maintain agricultural productivity and includes environmental measures such as tree planting to enhance biodiversity.

We are proud to have delivered this major solar project in Italy, which not only generates clean, affordable energy but also pioneers a more sustainable approach to land use. Castrum demonstrates the potential of agrivoltaics - enabling renewable energy generation and agricultural activity to thrive side by side,” said Marta Martinez Queimadelos, Cero Generation.

Centrica Energy supports the project through a long-term, subsidy-free PPA, managing the trading of solar energy and ensuring compliance with certification schemes. The collaboration strengthens Centrica’s presence in Southern Europe and contributes to the region’s renewable energy mix.

Centrica’s commitment to long-term renewable energy procurement sends a strong signal to the market about the essential role utility companies can play in accelerating the clean energy transition. By backing projects like Castrum, they’re not only supporting renewable electricity deployment; they actively engage in the acceleration of emissions' reduction, while enabling the infrastructure and investment needed to build a more sustainable and diverse energy system across Europe.
