Biomethane is transforming how we decarbonise transport and industry, offering certified green gas solutions across Europe. As ambitions for renewable gas grow, biomethane is set to play an even greater role in shaping a cleaner future.
Building and operating safe, efficient and sustainable biomethane production facilities is critically important to the success of the sector, but it is only half of the story. The versatility of biomethane means it can be used in a range of end-use cases to displace fossil gas or other carbon intensive fuels. It’s important to consider where biomethane is used to offer the most carbon savings alongside building confidence through secure and stable supply chains.
Connecting Producers with End-Consumer
The demand for biomethane, whether from voluntary or compliance markets, is about where the gas goes, how it is used, and the value it creates for transport, industry and the climate.

At Centrica Energy, we work every day to connect upstream production with these markets and sectors where biomethane delivers the greatest impact. Using an important principle of mass balancing, as verified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standards, biomethane can be moved from producer to consumer using the existing gas distribution network, including cross border trading.
Voluntary actions, road transport, ETS obligations and maritime compliance requirements are leading the way. Across Europe, more fleets are turning towards biomethane as a practical, scalable solution for decarbonising heavy goods vehicles.
Biomethane in Transport and Industry
Bio-LNG and bio-CNG are already powering trucks and vessels on major corridors, offering a drop in alternative to fossil fuels. Our partnership with Gasrec, the UK’s largest supplier of bio-LNG, is a clear example of how we are helping to expand refueling infrastructure and give fleet operators the certainty they need to invest in cleaner transport.

In the UK, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) system rewards the use of sustainable fuels like biomethane, with fuel suppliers under increasing pressure to supply sustainable fuels.

Similar mechanisms exist across Europe, creating a strong pull for certified green gas. Centrica Energy’s trading team ensures that biomethane from our network of producers is matched to these high-value, compliance-driven markets. We manage the certification, documentation, and delivery so that every molecule of gas can be counted towards a customer’s decarbonisation targets.
Matching the Biomethane Supply to Demand
Centrica Energy’s main role is to match supply to demand. One of the unique challenges in the biomethane market is aligning upstream production with downstream compliance needs, supplying the right quality of biomethane to the right customer.

The value of biomethane depends not just on the volume, but on the feedstock, the timing of delivery and the specific sustainability criteria of each market. Our team works closely with both producers and end users to ensure that the right gas, with the right certification, reaches the right customer at the right time. This means optimising everything from feedstock selection to delivery schedules, whilst maintaining compliance with certification, end markets, and cross-border trades.

Centrica Energy sits at the intersection of production and use and services the full value chain. We understand the complexities of both sides, and we have the scale and expertise to move biomethane across borders, manage certificates, and deliver to the most demanding customers.
Outlook for Biomethane
Whether it is a fleet operator looking to decarbonise road transport, a shipping company preparing for FuelEU Maritime or an industrial user seeking to reduce emissions, we make sure that biomethane is delivered tailored to the needs of the consumer.

Looking ahead, as Europe raises its ambitions for renewable gas, the role of biomethane in transport and industry will only grow. Centrica Energy is committed to supporting the supply chain that turns sustainable production into real world decarbonisation and helping our partners meet compliance, capture value and contribute to a cleaner future.
