Centrica Energy is pleased to announce signing of an optimisation agreement for the Gramme Storage 1 battery energy storage system (BESS), a 50 MW 2-hour Elia connected project under development in Tihange, Belgium. Initiated by Kallima Energies, the project is made possible with the support of public-private partnerships with SOCOFE, SFPIM, Wallonie Entreprendre Environnement, and ING.

With commercial operation expected between the first and second quarter of 2027, the project will rely on Centrica Energy’s established multi-market optimisation service, ensuring participation across Day-Ahead, Intraday, Imbalance markets as well as Ancillary Services (FCR, aFRR, mFRR) in Belgium while responding continuously to market volatility and renewable output patterns.

Appointed as the BRP, BSP, OPA, SA and VSP service provider by Kallima Energies, Centrica Energy will deliver 24/7/365 in‑house trading and optimisation services to the batteries. These services combine deep market expertise with advanced forecasting, hybrid trading strategies and AIenhanced algorithms to optimise battery performance across multiple markets, dynamically switching between revenue streams to capture value wherever it arises.

It is a pleasure to work with Kallima Energies on the Gramme Storage 1 project, which adds valuable flexibility to the Belgian power system during a period where volatility and renewable volumes are increasing quickly. The commitment to build this asset on a merchant exposed basis reflects the progress of flexibility markets in Belgium and highlights the strength of Kallima’s vision for the energy transition.

Kristian Gjerløv-Juel
VP, Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation

Gramme Storage 1 represents one of Belgium’s important new battery investments, developed by Kallima Energies as part of its mission to deliver reliable and high value projects that support the energy transition. Kallima focuses on solutions that enable cleaner and more flexible electricity systems through activities such as energy storage that capture surplus renewable electricity and return it to the grid when demand is high.

Thanks to our collaboration with Centrica Energy, Kallima Energies has secured a strong trading & optimisation partner for its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) investment. We aim to build on this experience and expand our collaboration in future developments.

Guillaume Poncelet
General Manager, Kallima Energies

The project, valued at approximately €40 million, will be developed in Tihange (Huy), Wallonia, where given the site's characteristics, both in terms of available space and grid connection possibilities, further studies have already been initiated to examine potential capacity expansions.
