Advantages of Gas Certificates

Gas Certificates - or renewable energy certificates for gas - provide a framework for verifying the renewable origin and sustainability of gas, including biomethane. These certificates, such as Biomethane Guarantees of Origin and Proof of Sustainability (PoS) ensure traceability from production to consumption. These certificates are crucial for verifying the sustainability and renewable origin of your energy consumption. They ensure transparency, traceability, and compliance with global standards, helping you meet your green energy goals.

Types of Gas Certificates

  • Biogas Guarantees of Origin (BGOs) are certificates that verify the renewable origin of energy. They play a crucial role in the energy market by providing traceability. With BGOs, you can document that your energy consumption is sourced from biogas. Our comprehensive understanding of BGOs and the numerous relevant registries helps you to ensure that your green energy claims are credible and verifiable. BGOs are instrumental for energy disclosure, providing a reliable mechanism to certify and communicate the renewable origin of consumed energy. By utilising BGOs, you can enhance your sustainability profile, meet regulatory requirements, and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Proof of Sustainability (PoS) are essential for verifying that renewable gas production adheres to stringent environmental and sustainability standards. These documents are mandatory in most compliance markets, and help to ensure that the entire lifecycle of the gas, from production to consumption, meets regulatory requirements and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A PoS is strictly bound to a batch of biomethane and to the BGOs.

  • Green gas certificates are already recognised for offsetting Scope 1 emissions under the EU ETS regulation. Similar acceptance is anticipated for both the UK ETS and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Nevertheless, we advise consulting with your auditors to determine the appropriate reflection of these certificates in your carbon accounting.
